My Life In A Bag

As a coxswain it is always essential to be prepared for all situations.  Having a coxie bag will be a great help to you, not only on the water, but off the water as well.

Items to carry with you at all times:
  • Watch – It is always important to stay on task and on time.  Coaches always appreciate a coxswain who can do those things efficiently.  A watch also helps on race day when you are warming up and making your way to the starting line.  Knowing the time lets you know if you need to power up to the line or if you have time for more drills, ect.  If anything a watch is always helpful when your rowers ask what time it is 3 times every practice
  • Electrical Tape – So many uses here!  Taping your coxbox, headset, charger, riggers, and oars to make them distinctively yours.  I also always tape down my bow numbers for extra safety.  Shoe Velcros wont stay down?  Tape them.  Extra wires sticking out?  Tape them.  Need something to hang from your stern when traveling?  Electrical tape works for that too.
  • Band Aids – It is a sport after all.  There will be boo-boos and your rowers will appreciate you a lot more if you have them on hand in the boat and on land.  (I ask for band aids in my stocking at Christmas)
  • Spare Parts –  You will drop a washer in the dirt and you will not be able to find it.  Your rowers will drop a spacer into the river.  Having a spare never hurts!
  • Ziploc baggie – Personally I keep my band aids in a baggie to keep them dry and I always keep extra baggies for my cell phone when it rains
  • Spare Pair of Gloves – For when they inevitably get soaked from a.) taking a huge wake b.) stroke getting you with front splash during a big dip to port c.) when you forget to take off your gloves before checking the skeg/rudder for leaves.  Dry/Warm hands are happy hands.
